Charity: Operation Warmth

In the winter months, due to ocean breezes and desert terrain, southern California can become extraordinarily cold at night despite being warm during the day. Seeing as the economy has seen a significant downturn in the past year, thousands of people have become or are homeless in the Los Angeles & Orange County metropolitan areas.  Operation Warmth hopes to provide a renewed sense of hope and vitality in the spirits of all Californians.

Beginning in 2008, Operation Warmth is a special project that aims to provide the homeless population of Los Angeles and Orange County with a warmer winter.  During the fall, volunteers for Operation Warmth collect new & gently used blankets and coats for those in need.  Items such as toiletries, backpacks, and first aid kits are also collected for distribution.  Once items are collected, they are sorted by volunteers and distributed to various shelters in southern California.  Over 450 new & lightly used blankets and coats were collected and distributed in the project’s inaugural year.  For the 2009-2010 winter, over 7,000 items were collected and distributed.

We will be eating to our heart's content at Starry Kitchen in downtown LA! If you haven't already heard the buzz on this eatery, it all began by serving food out of one couple's apartment in North Hollywood. When the authorities were alerted and closed down their operation, a struggling downtown restaurant offered up their space without having to front the capital. Starry Kitchen is now a fully staffed downtown restaurant with plenty of yummy bites for you foodies out there!
